Shorter Catechism Q. 5. Are there more Gods than one? A. There is but one only, the living and true God.
Commentary: One of the basic truths of the Bible is that there is only one God. Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one.” This means that God is not many gods. He is one God. And he is the only God. There is no other. Paul says that “there is no God but one,” and Jeremiah 10:10 says, “But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King.”
It is important to note that the Bible doesn’t speak of one god in the abstract, as if only to say that monotheism (one god) is true as opposed to polytheism (many gods). The Bible declares that Yahweh is one. In other words, the God who called Abraham, the God who rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt, the God who removed Israel from the land, the God who became flesh and dwelt among us, is the true and living God.
Other religions, of course, have claimed that their god or gods are real and true. Ancient Egyptians, Canaanites, Romans and Greeks believed in many gods. Hinduism is also polytheistic. Islam, however, is monotheistic and asserts that there is only one god, and his name is Allah. These gods are only so-called gods. They are false and dead, not true or living. They are idols, creations of sinful and rebellious humanity.
The LORD our God is true because he is the God that is. He is living because he possesses life in himself, and all life comes from him. “For in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).”
